Who Is At Risk?
  • People who have a family history of diabetes
  • People who have been diagnosed with Impaired glucose tolerance (sometimes called pre-diabetes)
  • Anyone over the age of 50 even if they have no other risk factors
  • People who are overweight
  • Women who have had gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) or a baby over 4 kg (9lbs)
  • People who have heart disease or have had a heart attack or stroke
  • People with high blood pressure

Screening for Diabetes

  • Anyone over the age of 50 should be screened regularly for diabetes even if you don’t have any risk factors
  • People who have risk factors such as a family history of diabetes should be checked when they are over the age of 40
  • Screening test can be done through your family doctor or laboratories.
